In 1999 ESPN aired a program called Sports Century which counted down the top 100
athletes of the 20th century. Near the end of the series, which included a 30 minute program on
each athlete, they aired this video to the music of Dream On by Aerosmith. We dare you to
watch it and not see America - all that was... all that can be. Pause the video when you see Grambling
Coach, Eddie Robinson, at his retirement ceremony. The tears... the lines of history etched
on his face... that look. It captured the many years of no money, bus rides, players who played for
Grambling because no major state school would allow black athletes. In that one second shot of his face
you see it all. The struggle. The victory. The purpose of it all and the struggle
overcome. You see the realization that it's over. It's over. The weight of a life well
lived about to end. It's the struggle that brings purpose. And this video... more than any other
supports that supposition.
